My advise to Ethiopian Youth (Probably My Younger Self)- Live for a Cause Worthy of Your Precious Time

I personaly believe that today's youth is born with tremendous opportunities but with constant distractions. Far and in between, select few decipher the code and navigate the complex journey to their advantage. The large mass are yet to take longer.

Back in the days when I was at primary and secondary schools, Temar Lijie was the driving motto. I now know that strong motivation has been steadily waning even if we know eduaction is even far important today and in the future. If we think we do not see the value of knowledge as most does these days, it is time to ask ourselves a better question. Educating ourselves and aquiring the right set of knowledges and skills is far more than a financial metric. Our success and happpines all depends on it. Knowledge continues to be a potential power for change. The only question to ask is whether the formal education is enough to empower us in the work place and in business.

As much as there are massess of people wondering how to survive the harsh reality of life, there are select few who dares taking the path of wisdom early on. For today, let me mention the choices of Hana Hailu, Yonas Duguma and Kalewongel Tesfaye who are proving age is not a thing. They have contagious visions and you would grow together if you join their network.
If I borrow Hana's words 'በትላንትናችን ከማንም ጋር አንጣላም በነጋችን ከማንም ጋር አንደራደርም-literally translated to 'we don't quarrel by yesterday and no compromise for our tomorrow' is a kind of mindset that we all should nurture.
Digital has brough up tremendous possibilities but not without flaws unless it is wisely managed. For some one who consistently reads unmannered and uncenssored comments, suggestions and write ups in the social media and behind desktops, it only tells that something is going in the wrong direction.

Strive Masiyiwa, one of the few African inspirations, used to advise that whatever you do, do it with dignity. His message resonates more in this digital age where everything you say or write is permanently stored in the universe of internet. Good or bad, it would follow you whereever you go, sometimes taking yourself to clear it.

I suggest to watch Acrimony film that has captured the cost of bad habits early in our professional life. Digital bad habits are even worse.

Some of us may think we are annonymous when we posted some improper staff on the internet, yet we never realize our actions and preferences are easily traceable by the search engines. Literally, we are easily identifiable. By engaging in the wrong platforms, we are subconsciously ruining our opportunities in the scarce jobs market, be it now or ten years later.

After all, why waste the most important time, energy and money for something we never believed inside and no value to our existence.

Even if in the hardest way possible, COVID-19 pandemic has taught us a lesson that how much we depend on others even with those we thought we don't share the same value.

Your Travel Guide in Ethiopia

At a time where schools are back to life, I just hope that every one of us acknowleges and embraces the strenghts and flaws of the people around us and collaborate better for a common cause. Quick wins are either for the smartest or loosers. Most enduring and fulfilling success in life takes time, perseverance, hard work, collaboration and many more.

As to the opportunities in the digital space, we might complain that the policy has failed us, yet there are select few who shape themselves and flourish within the same environment which means, most of our failures are as a result of our own making.

Humans are social animals and we drive the best satisfaction in our life from helping others through our hard work. Simon Sinek, a renowned speaker and author, asks his audiences to recall a name of a teacher who influenced them one way or another or be a reason to be the better version of themselves today. Not surprisingly, every one in the audience had carried that name in their memory even after twenty plus years. Then he asks, the names of all the other teachers who the audience met at school. None of the audiences recall their names.

While I listen his lecture, I too reflected my own experiences at different stages of schoolig. Interestingly, I tend to remember the names of the teachers who taught me at elementary school than to the high school and the university. I feel like there was more connection at personal level early on than the latter stages. It won't take me longer to recall the names of my elementary teachers while I struggle to name a single person at a university. I bet it is more of the same with you as well.

It too is similar in life. We tend to cary the memory and names of the people who encouraged us, supported us, motivated us, guided us, advised us, collaborated with us etc. If it is the case, why don't we spend our time wisely and try to become that memorable person we look after instead of spending unproductive life behind social media- technically promoting hate speech.

For some of you who really do not know where to start to educate your self, here are my advise.

Freely Available Cources and platforms

Coursera.org: Free and Premium courses taught by top instructors from world-class universities and companies, so you can learn something new anytime, anywhere.

edx.org: Increase access to high-quality education for everyone, everywhere; Enhance teaching and learning on campus and online, Advance teaching and learning through research. It has useful Free and premium courses.

Linkedin Learning: In addition to summarizing your professional activities as your digital CV, it too has time bound courses.

Facebook for Business: teaches you social media marketing and how you can bring a business online in Face Book. Facebook Marketplace is hitting the ground to support Ethiopian online business. It is good to leverage the opportunity.

Google Digital Garage: teaches you digital marketing and how you can bring a buisness online in Google.

Blogger.com: (blogspot.com extension) provides blogging and hosting services free of charge. Blogging helps to connect to more professonal connections and trends. By blogging here, you will probably fail fast and learn for a more professional blogging. If you see the browser, you learn that the article you are reading on is in fact based on blogger.
I find writing interesting because as I write, I read, as a read I reflec, and as I reflect I grow, and more.
Medium: A Free and Premium blogging site where you write your new ideas to a larger online audience.

We are what we read, and it is fundamental to follow the trend and readjust our expertise to the one we want to excel. One easy way to understad the market needs is to follow job boards and read between the lines of every job requirment. We don't have to apply for every job vacancy but continue to learn the market needs. For example, African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and E-commerce are fast approaching the Ethiopian market and how do we see ourselves fitting in there? In this ever changing environment, we fail to capture the trend means, we allow our selves to be less relevant as professonals and enterpreneurs.

Most of us (Ethiopians) think hard skills are everything for professional world. Sadly, despite needed, hard skills are half the puzzle mostly being only the basis or the gate way. It is important but does not make us a better person, especially in Ethiopia. More than 80 percent of our success in business or professional career depends on Soft Skills. What is Soft Skill any way and how we developmet it?

In my experience, we develop soft skills by reading, coaching ourselves and practicing in life than the formal school. The platforms I shared above have all the guides and as we study, we will discover more that is fundamental and important tailored to our preferences.
Guys, don't buy the school stereotype that only yours is the best. It only limits your exposure to many other beneficial professional perspectives.
Today's work place looks after partners (not mear employees) who equally share the burden and make decisions on behalf and in the interest of organizations. The expectation is that we are productive, reliable, responsive, get along with people insideout, get things done faster, navigate the technical and digital world and so much more.

Enaging in constructive discussions with others, actively learning, following trends, and setting examples means we are not only helping ourselves to lead a dignified future but also fostering a healthy community arround us which reinforces each other in a virtuous cycle.

The Questions is are we willing to do the necessary and dignified moves?

One final Thought: What ever you do to succeed,
Showing Up ^ Exposure Matters!!
It Is the First Key Step Leading You Where You Want to Go
Be bold to embrace It!

Look Around- Wisdom is Under the Surface

Five years ago, a senior colleague (an African Expat) and I went out for a business trip in to one of the countrysides of Ethiopia to see if the project we used to supervise was going well. In one late afternoon, while we were on the field full of bushes and shrubs, my colleague disappeared from the scene and I was worried that something bad might happen to him given he was a complete stranger with no good grasp of the local language. After a few minutes of up and down searching, I found him safe sitting and talking with a farmer who happened to be around. To my wonder, both were having a great time smiling and chatting drawing the little words we taught to the expat colleague.       Related Read:   Aligning Ethiopian Energy Markets for Innovation and More Jobs Ensuring he was safe, I had to ask him what interested him to leave me and join the farmer in an environment he was not familiar with. His answer was awakening.  You know what, he said to me: This man (the farmer) is a leader in

Tele Birr Opens New Opportunities for Growth-Time to Shape the Business Mindset

Slowly yet surely, innovation(digital) is taking ground in the Ethiopian market for real. Over the years, reliable and easily accessible payment option has been one of the real bottlenecks to translate innovation in to value especially for digital products and services. tele birr is here now as a real opportunity at Ethiopian youth’s disposal. The business environment has been in clear lack of innovations over the years due to the fact that there were not sufficient incentives to do so in the market place. As witnessed in neighboring countries, mobile money applications such as  tele birr  are real recipes for financial inclusion particularly to the rural mass of the Ethiopian population who would not otherwise be connected to any financial instruments for many years to come. As the financial inclusion fosters across the country as the result of the application of tele birr , increased and new demands emerge for products and services. With an innovative business mindset anchorin

For Ethiopian New Graduates & Youth: Defining ICT (Infrastructure) Roles in the Market Place!

Caption: Google. 👉   If you are like me, read this piece. The schools I went for did not prepare me well for jobs. Over the years, I have to learn everything by myself and the hard way. Over the last few years, I have the pleasure of working with new employees and mentor interns as part of my current role and I came to learn that much has not changed at schools since I left.   Hoping it will help new graduates clarify the job roles and expectation in the industry and tailor their approach to prepare well advance, let me briefly clarify the roles and expertise required in the ICT sector. Bear in mind that this advice focuses more on the infrastructure aspect as opposed to applications. As you know it, business is multidimensional and usually multiple disciplines are needed to run it effectively. For now, I will narrowly focus more on the technology part. Technology itself covers many product lines and evolves quickly and I will approach the subject more broadly.    Life tho

Aligning Ethiopian Energy Markets for Innovation and More Jobs

They say ' Necessity' is the mother of 'Invention' and 'Opportunity' is its father.  As in any society, Ethiopia needed cash but its business environment has never been sufficiently oriented that way. The digital apps, plugins or features we browse on a daily basis whether for business or fun are mostly developed by academic researchers or entrepreneurs sponsored and commercialized by market players anywhere else. Why not in Ethiopia?  At the very best, Ethiopian graduates come up with new ideas, concepts and demonstrations every year to serve their academic purposes yet we often do not hear continuation or upscaling of their work to solve societal problems and benefit themselves in financial terms. In my experience, the main reason, if I have to blame, is the lack of commercial orientation of the market in the country. Societal problems are mostly the same across the globe and a software built to solve an Ethiopian problem, for example, can also help solve a

My 6 Years Old Son Taught Me a Lesson-----Resilience

Popcorn-Photo Credit- Father To clear the context for a reader in the future, COVID-19 disrupted all of our life style in a way we have never seen before. Almost all countries fall for complete or partial lockdown to contain the spread of the virus. In Ethiopia too state of emergency was declared. Schools at all levels closed. The government allowed non- essential workers to stay home and work from there. Every emergency action including quarantining, testing, isolating, medicating and every recommended preventive measures are being taken since the outbreak of the pandemic has been declared. So much is the same in our home except that I am allowed to work outside given the company I work for is fully operational with the necessary precautionary and preventive measures in force to ensure employees wellbeing.  ads  Any Plan to Travel to Ethiopia ,  Book    with  Afro Experience Your Travel Guide in Ethiopia  Since the schools’ closure order was issued, my only son (Z. Drink the Last Beer: Based On True story

Phot credit @google By any measure, Ethiopia is a big country be it historical, Natural resource, population wise, geographically or in whatever measure we take in. Sometimes, it is hard to accept the country stays poor (material wise) given the huge potential we sit on. Labor (a fraction of 100 million people), resource (Land, water) and capital , essentially driven from the first two, are the three most important factors required for development, and we have enough of them.  Yet, we remained at the rock bottom in the development ranking. Why?   For example, we proudly claim (rightly so) that Ethiopia is among the top tourism destinations but tourism's contribution to the country's GDP is well below the figure in neighboring Kenya. Given its history, there is no doubt that there happen to be foreigners, intellectuals, who explored the country upside down and understands it well more than the nationals think we know our country and ourselves.   There is no question that the lik
